[Torg] Possibilities: Better Results Now VS Character Advancement

Ok. I've read these, and the ideas have merit. I'm in favor of them, but I can see how the players would like it better.

I'm against supporting players(by returning spent possiblities) poor choice on character actions. Like someone pointed out, a player who puts his character in a position where they have to use possibilities to get out of said situtation, should not be supported. E.G. There are 50 shocktroopers, and a player decides his character can take them all on, runs out to face them in the open, gets shot, shoots back, gets shot again, shoots back, etc....spends numerous possibilites countering damage, bumping die rolls to hit more on the one on many chart, etc...does not deserve to get their possibilties back, nor to get rewarded in any substancial form. Regaurdless to their character concept.

Characters who get "caught" in situtations while accomplishing a decent plan, well that is indeed another situation. E.G. The player's character is attempting to sneak (dressed as a knight) over and open the gate for the rest of the PCs, accross the castle's open area, trips, is detected as a foe, and 50 archers attempt to shoot the character, well as long as they don't sit there and exchange shots in the open, perhaps accomplish their task, I would agree that they should get some of their possibilities back. After all the rest of the group isn't sticking their neck out, at least not now, in the same way.

It is very much a situtational rule you are discussing. I don't think there is a cut and dry way of laying a rule down like you are discussing that wouldn't lead to encouragment of poor character descisions.

ALSO (this is more important for myself)

I don't think the characters would have as many bad things happen to them if you "replace" what they've spent. Bad things that occur to characters add a dimension to the story telling and character history. E.G. Sure we lit the signal fire, but we lost that plane, Jim's big gun, and Suzy "Stealth Ninja Extrodinaire" got turned into a vampire, but is still here to battle evil. Hazzah!!!

Perhaps I'm morbid, but heroes that fail have far greater successes.

The final line in all this is the enjoyment the GM and players have. So I say you should figure out with your players what is going to be most enjoyable for the group. Everygroup is different.
