[Torg] Reboot: 3 New Initiative Systems Part I: The Simple
System (LONG)

There is one change I must immediately make to the speed list of The Simple
Initiative System. I unfortunately listed Very Slow: Speed 12 as the time
it takes to close to melee and then execute a melee attack. This is false.
Not only does the number of counts to close to melee differ depending on
whether the target is nearby or not, movement has its own speed and is
handled as a separate (though possible simultaneous) action from dramatic
actions.
Performing a melee attack is a Normal Speed 6 action, if you are in melee
range. A Move action is a Fast Speed 3 action that enables you to travel ½
your full movement distance for the round. You may do this once or twice
per round (or none at all).
Remember that you only need to be in melee range on the count that the melee
attack resolves.
Depending one which option you choose to handle simultaneous movement, it
could take6 to 12 counts to perform a melee attack on someone, assuming that
he is your full movement value away:
· If you prohibit simultaneous movement, they will have to perform a
Move action for a count of 3, a second Move action for another count of 3,
and an Attack action for a count of 6, a total of 12 counts.
· If you permit simultaneous movement at no penalty, they will be
able to start a Move action and an Attack action in the same count. Three
counts later, they are halfway through the Attack, and do another Move
Action. At the end of six count, they have closed to melee and can now
resolve their Move action.
· If you permit simultaneous movement at penalty, they will have to
roll for both Move Actions for stumbling with a multi Action penalty, and
they will also get a multi action penalty on the actual attack. Still a six
count set of actions though, assuming no stumble.
So, depending on how each of us decides to handle movement, you would be
looking at either 12 counts or 6 counts.
So Very Slow: Speed 12 should be modified to read:
· Very Slow: Speed 12 applies if your action is as fast as: speaking
a paragraph or two, picking up a disassembled weapon, assembling it
(assuming you know how) and firing; finding a file on a computer.
o These are usually actions such as First Aid, Language, and other actions
where time must be taken and there may be several steps.
Thanks. Please modify your copies of the system with that change.
One other change, now that I think about it. If one wishes, instead of
taking a Fast Move action at speed 3 that crosses half of your full movement
amount, you may take a Normal Move action at speed 6 that crosses your full
movement amount. I mention this for ease of determining MultiAction
penalties if one as GM chooses the third bullet point above about permitting
simultaneous Movement and other actions.
Thanks again.
