You can feel that way, and alter the rules to suit your feeling if you like,
but it is certainly contrary to the printed rule. The rule regarding
countering reads, "Whenever an enemy spends a Possibility to alter a die
roll, your character may cancel the extra die roll by spending a Possibility
himself." There is nothing about negating the expenditure of a Possibility,
nor about changing what a Possibility was spent on.

So the rule you have based your decision on has been created out of nothing.
There's nothing wrong with playing that way, if you care to do so, but it is
simply incorrect to claim any support from the printed rules.
