We use strike in a similar manner, meaning that it can do lethal damage. Considering most MA's end up picking a place on a person to hit by called strike, not losing the first wound in non-lethal damage makes a difference.

Actually it's not even that, the Martial Arts skill grants STR+2 damage
by itself (Nippon Tech SB, p73).

Strike basically does nothing. People have houseruled in effects for it,
saying it's what gives you STR+2 damage is one possibility. At one point
I used a rule that said Strike let you do lethal as opposed to stunning
damage with Martial Arts. Later on I just dropped Strike and replaced it
with the Palm Strike discipline out of the Tokyo Citybook (DV STR+3).
