I think you've missed the point - the whole thing is exactly how
the Tharkold sourcebook was written. It's all supposed to be a big
secret invasion going on beneath the surface, but it's so in your
face that you get your head bitten off as soon as you poke your head
out the door by creatures that are so powerful you don't stand a
chance against them, especially if you do something stupid like
pick one of the non-combat templates.

So maybe not "good advertising" so much as satire aimed at one of
the games' worse settings.
