My friend Del Webb (from way back at the beginning of the List, author  
of the Consilium Magica) did a writeup on such a phenomenon- the  
fragments of a destroyed DD. They lacked sentience, as the DD was  
utterly toasted, but could be "tapped" for PE like e-shards.

Something bad happened as a result of such tappings (the DD fragment  
took PE from the cosm, not from itself, like an e-shard does) but I  
can't remember the mechanics of this.
