A useful resource on death traps in fiction can be found at TV Tropes:

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DeathTrap

While it doesn't have rules per se, it does cover a lot of the common
behaviors master villains employ with their death traps (though sadly
they don't provide as much coverage on how the heroes escaped from the
traps.)

> My previous attempt at a Nile Death Trap (The Combustion Chamber explained at the end of this message) lacked the “safe” way out. I wasn’t too worried about the group as they are quite dynamically resourceful, and they did succeed in escaping, but it was pointed out later I missed that apparent rule of having a way for the denizens of a Nile Death Trap to escape unharmed if “blah” is done/this path chosen/etc.

In my Torg games I found that my clever Nile death traps were too clever
and what I thought was the obvious "safe" way out just wasn't obvious to
the players. Over time I had to go more and more with cliched death
traps that the players would recognize so that they'd know how their
characters were supposed to escape from them.
